This was a lecture delivered by the two noble and esteemed Shaykhs: Muhammad Ibn Ramzaan al-Haajiree and Saalih Ibn Sa’d as-Suhaymee – may Allaah preserve them both – on Tuesday, the 15th of Jumaadul-Oolaa 1432H, at Masjid Qubaa in al-Madeenah, the city of the Prophet.

Shakh Muhammad Nasir ud-Deen al-Albaanee on the three categories of Tawheed.

“And I say in truth that Ibn Taymiyyah did not come with something new. Tawheed ar-Rububiyyah has been textually stipulated in the Qur’an as has Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah and Tawheed as-Sifaat. All of these things are textually stipulated in the Qur’an and Sunnah.

However, Ibn Taymiyyah clarified these meanings through Tafsir of their texts from the Book (Qur’an) & the Sunnah. So, it becomes binding upon the Muslims to clarify them with this conciseness because not every Muslim is able to understand, for example where has the text about Tawheed ar-Rububiyyah come from, (or) where has the text about Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah (or al-Ibaadah) come from, (or) where has Tawheed as-Sifaat come from. The common folk are obligated to understand the testimony of Tawheed. So, they are not able to understand it except by way of the people of knowledge.

So, if we disregard the categorisation of Ibn Taymiyyah which clarifies the text of the Book and the Sunnah from which these three categories are derived; from Tawheed ar-Rububiyyah, Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah, and Tawheed as-Sifaat then what is the way that makes possible conceiving the texts to understand this reality, the reality of ‘Laa ilaha illallaah’.”

Appendix: Definition of the three categories of Tawheed:

1. Tawheed ar-Rububiyyah – Oneness of the Lordship of Allaah: To believe there is only one Lord for all that exists and He is the Creator, Organiser, Planner, Sustainer & Giver of security, and that is Allah.

2. Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah – Oneness of the Worship of Allaah: To believe that none has the right to be worshipped in truth (e.g. praying, invoking, asking for help (from the unseen), swearing, slaughtering sacrifices, giving charity, fasting, pilgrimage etc) except Allaah alone.

3. Tawheed al-Asmaa was-Sifaat – Oneness of the Names & Qualities/Attributes of Allaah: To believe that:
We must not name or qualify Allaah except with that He or His Messenger has named or Qualified Allaah.
None can be named or qualified with the Names or Attributes of Allaah, e.g. The Most-High.
We must believe in all the Qualities of Allaah which Allaah has stated in His Book (Qur’an) or mentioned through the Messenger without changing their meanings, or ignoring them completely, or twisting the meanings, or giving resemblance to any of the created things.

Shaykh Muhammad Nasir ud-Deen Al-Albaanee about Voting:

Question: What is the ruling on some of the American Muslims participating in the elections that take place in America? They use as proof for that the principle of taking the lesser of two evils. They think that one of those candidates who are running for office will be less oppressive & less problematic upon Islam & the Muslims?

Answer: Kufr is one religion & [our] Rabb Azza wa Jal reminds those Muslims who think they are applying the principle of taking the lesser of two evils; Allaah Ta ‘Ala said, “And never will the Jews or the Christians be pleased with you until you follow their religion” (Al-Qur’an: 2: 120).

So I am amazed with all amazement at these youth who rely upon the likes of this delusion as occurs in your question, Barak Allaah feek. And Allaah Azza wa Jal says, “And don’t incline towards those who do wrong such that the fire should touch you…” (Al-Qur’an: 11: 113). And the fire of the dunya (worldly life) comes before the fire of the Hereafter.

Due to that we say that it is not permissible to participate in the likes of these elections because that participation means taking the Kuffar (disbelievers) as friends through your actions. And that is Haraam (impermissible) according to the text of the Qur’an, where the Rabb ul-Anaam said, “And if any amongst you take them as friends then he is surely one of them.” (Al-Qur’an 5: 51).

Praying Behind an Innovator – Shaykh Sa’ad ibn Nasir ash-Shitri

Question - O Noble Shaykh, may Allaah give you good. The questioner from Algeria asks. Is it permissible for me to pray Taraweeh behind an imam who is an innovator?

Answer - It is better & preferred for the person to pray behind an imam who is a person of Tawheed, upon the Sunnah. And this is because the person being upon Tawheed & Sunnah will enable him to have an effect on the hearts of the people. And this will render the devils unable to divert the hearts of the people from reflecting and pondering upon his recitation or it will be minimal. As for the imam who is an innovator then he will have with him that which distracts the people from reflection upon the meanings of that which he is reading.

Furthermore, praying behind an imam who is an innovator is to promote him and endorse him. And we intend to get closer to Allaah by endorsing & promoting the people of the Sunnah. And to make them known & to turn the people towards them and to have them work by that which has been narrated from them.

Furthermore, when a person prays behind an innovator the people may believe that he is down with the innovator and as a result evil things will be said about him. And it is from the Islamic legislation that a person should protect himself from having evil things said about him. And for this reason when the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) left to take his wife Sophia to her house he saw two men & when they saw him they began to walk fast, so the Messenger of Allaah called them & said, “Verily, this is my wife Sophia.” And the two men said, “And how could we suspect you O Messenger of Allaah?” And the Messenger of Allaah said, “Verily, Shaytan (Satan) runs through the son of Adam just as his blood runs through him, and I fear he will place something into your hearts!”

After having established this; now if the person does not find an imam upon the Sunnah & Tawheed is he able to pray behind an innovator? We say the innovators are of two types. The first type is the one who directs any aspect of worship to other than Allaah, such as the one who supplicates to the Messenger of Allaah: saying, “O Messenger of Allaah bestow rain upon me” or something similar to this. In this case it is not permissible to pray behind him because he is not from the people of Islaam. Thus, his prayer is not correct therefore no one should pray behind him. So, if the person is not able to find anyone except this imam then he should pray Taraweeh and his obligatory Prayers by himself.

But if the innovation of the innovator does not reach the level of Kufr or Shirk. Thus he directs every aspect of worship to Allaah alone then it is permissible for the person to pray with him, although it is better to search for another imam. But it is valid to pray behind this person because his prayer is valid for himself thus it is correct for others to pray with him.

Where to Look During Qunoot -  Shaykh Sa’ad ibn Nasir ash-Shitri

Question - This is the last question, the questioner asks, “where does the supplicating person look when standing for the Dua for Qunoot?”

Answer - If the supplicating person is making Dua during the prayer then the ruling is that he looks towards the place of Sujood (prostration). He looks at the place he is going to prostrate to just as he would do in the remaining pillars of the prayer. And he does not raise his eyesight to the sky nor does he look in front of him.

And it appears in an authentic narration that the Messenger of Allaah (peace & blessings of Allaah be upon him) forbade raising the eyesight to the sky. And he said, “Surely the people will either stop raising their sight to the sky or their sight will be taken away from them and it shall not return to them.”

Therefore, the sight should be directed toward the place of Sujood (prostration). And if the sight is raised slightly in front of him then this is permissible because it appears in a Hadeeth that the Messenger (peace & blessings be upon him) of Allaah looked at the niche in front of him, and he saw a portion of grapes in front of him. So, this is permissible but the person should not do it on a continual basis nor make it his habit. As for the raising of the sight to the sky then this is prohibited and it is not permissible even during the Dua of Qunoot.

From the affairs which are connected to these issues is that the person should suffice himself by saying ‘Ameen’ and he should not use other words or phrases such as saying Subhan’Allaah, exalting Allaah, La ilaaha illalaa or anything like this when the Imaam is making Dua in the Qunoot because none of this has been narrated. Therefore, the person should suffice himself with that which has been narrated.
